Golf Handicap Calculator

Use this powerful golf handicap calculator to estimate your golf handicap index based on recent scores, the course rating, and the slope rating. This tool computes score differentials and averages the lowest differentials according to common handicap guidelines to produce an estimated Handicap Index, enabling golfers to measure their performance efficiently.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, understanding your golf handicap is crucial for improving your game and fair competition. This calculator is designed to make the process straightforward and easy to understand.

How the Golf Handicap Calculator Works

For each score, we compute a differential using the formula:

Differential = (Score - Course Rating) × 113 / Slope Rating

The calculator then selects the lowest differentials based on the number of scores you provided (following a common selection table) and averages them. A 0.96 multiplier, a commonly used "bonus for excellence," is applied to produce the final Handicap Index displayed.

Example of Golf Handicap Calculation

Given scores: 85, 88, 82, 90, 86, Course Rating 72, Slope Rating 113:

  1. Compute each differential: (85 - 72) × 113 / 113 = 13.0
  2. Repeat for each score to get a set of differentials.
  3. Select the lowest differential(s) per the selection table and average them.
  4. Apply a 0.96 multiplier to get the estimated Handicap Index.

FAQs about Golf Handicap

Is this the official Handicap Index?

This calculator provides an estimated Handicap Index. Official handicaps are maintained by golf associations and require an authorized posting of scores, course data verification, and compliance with the World Handicap System (WHS). Use this tool for quick estimates.

How many scores do I need?

The more valid recent scores you provide (ideally 20), the more stable the index. This tool will accept fewer scores, but the result will be less reliable. With 5 scores, the calculation will use the single lowest differential, which is less representative than an average from a larger sample.

What are Course Rating and Slope Rating?

Course Rating measures the expected score for a scratch golfer. Slope Rating indicates the relative difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. You can find both ratings on your scorecard or the course's website.

Tips for Accurate Golf Handicap Results

  • Enter your adjusted gross scores (post any local adjustments or handicap-stroke limits applied by your association).
  • Ensure Course Rating and Slope Rating are correct for the tees you played.
  • Use at least 5 recent scores; 20 scores produce the most stable index.
